Tony
Newsom, a decorated officer with the Los Angeles Police Department,
published author and founder of First Class Protective Services,
made dramatic and lasting change in his personal and professional
life with the help of Tony Robbins. How did he do it? Read Officer
Newsom's story, in his own words:
In 1989, I joined the Los Angeles
Police Department. Having grown up in a Los Angeles neighborhood
less than a mile away from where the 1992 riots occurred, I was
inspired to join the police force by the grim reality of what I had
witnessed first-hand: violent crimes were increasing and more kids
were becoming involved
with gangs.
As I began to reflect on the crime
and devastation occurring in my own community daily, I wondered why
there were not outlets available to inform citizens about the
dangers in their communities; I wondered why the information I knew
as a police officer wasn’t being taught to the public and schools in
a consistent, easy-to-understand manner. So I spent a lot of time
talking to criminals to learn what had made them so successful, and
I compiled what I had learned so that I could share it with
community groups, educators, parents and students to empower them to
take preventative measures.
By 1992, I had developed a West
Valley version of the LAPD’s Jeopardy program to help reduce crimes
and gang involvement among youth, and I had founded the Positive
Results Corporation to implement safety programs in schools. But I
still felt I could do more.
In
1997, I attended Unleash
the Power Within with hopes of
learning how I could take my mission to the next level. Tony
reinforced my commitment to serving my community and personally
offered his Personal
Power II program to help me multiply my efforts. He showed me
how to take my simple business plan and rev it up to make a world of
impact.
Of
the many strategies I learned from
Personal Power II,
Tony’s pain/pleasure principle proved most useful to my mission.
In three of the books I’ve since written, “Top
10 Crimes That You and Your Family Should Beware Of,”
“Student Safety Tips, 40
That Every 1st – 2nd Grader Must Know,” and “Student Safety Tips, 45
That Every 3rd – 5th grader Must Know,”
I allow readers to experience the crimes vicariously so that later,
they will be graphically reminded of the consequences of any unsafe
action.
Personal Power II
also helped me use Tony’s Ultimate Success Formula to develop a more
aggressive and concrete vision for my life. It also taught me that
massive action yields massive results; by involving successful
publishers, the program director of Hope Worldwide Los
Angeles, numerous educators, college students and community
volunteers in my mission, I’ve been able to expand my reach and
impact more lives than I ever thought possible.
Throughout my career, I’ve
encountered many obstacles, but I’ve learned from Tony that any
challenge can be conquered if I evaluate my actions and result and
then change my approach. When I encountered resistance from
individuals in some of the communities I strove to protect, for
example, I redirected my focus toward those who were interested, and
I equipped them with the tools to spread my message of safety.
In all of his programs, Tony
teaches an incredible strategy called “modeling.” Over the years,
I’ve modeled Tony to achieve the success he’s had in impacting lives
around the world, helping people increase the quality of their
lives. My mission is to do the same in the field of safety. In fact,
my 10-year goal is to have inspired, motivated, taught and empowered
a minimum of 10% of the U.S. population in each state (approximately
30 million people) to live safer lives, including all public and
private schools that will accept my assistance. Thanks to Tony’s
guidance and example, I have cut myself off from the possibility of
not achieving this critical goal.
Beyond my 10-year goal, I plan to expand my reach to other
countries, addressing the safety issues that plague their
communities and schools as well as continuing to increase my
outreach in the U.S. While some people limit contribution to their
own communities, Tony showed me that it is possible to take it even
further. Instead of telling me I could do anything I put my mind to,
he showed me how.
